The top 5 egg-producing countries in Latin America

 

The region’s laying hen population increased by 4.7% in 2025, reaching almost 600 million birds.

Broiler production was a cause for celebration in Latin America in 2025, with the top five broiler producing countries, and their neighbors, registering a great performance. And the same was true for the region’s laying hen flocks. From 2024-2025, there was a 4.7% increase laying hens in production to 597.18 million.

According to data that I have collected from various poultry producers’ associations in the region, Mexico continues to have the largest laying hen population with 185.10 million birds. From 2024 to 2025 the flock grew by 5.6%. The Mexican flock accounts for 31% of all the laying hens in Latin America, that is to say, almost one in every three laying hens in Latin America is in Mexico.

Approaching Mexico in second place is Brazil, with 141.6 million birds and which recorded an expansion of 3.51% from 2024 to 2025. Brazill’s flock accounts for 23.7% of the region’s total flock meaning that, together, Mexico and Brazil are home to over half of the laying hen population, or 54.7%.

Next comes Argentina, a country that registered a strong growth rate of 8.7% from 2024 to 2025, one of the highest in the region. It has 62.7 million birds.

Colombia comes in at fourth place, with 58.3 million hens and growth of 4.1%. Peru is in fifth place with 28.5 million laying hens, recording a year-over-year growth of 2.9% when comparing 2025 to 2024.

All the other 12 countries that I researched have fewer than 20 million hens in production. All showed year-over-year growth, except for Venezuela, which, in contrast to the reported increase in chicken production, experienced a 9.2% decline in laying hens, falling from 14.18 million 2024 to 12.88 million in 2025.

Other countries have also shown impressive growth rates, such as Bolivia with a 32.3% increase to reach 12.85 million birds, and Costa Rica with a 20.8% increase, or 6 million hens. Paraguay also registered an 11.1% increase, with 5 million birds, and Uruguay, with 3.8 million laying hens, registered a 10.1% increase. El Salvador also registered an 8.5% increase, reaching almost 6 million laying hens.

Latin America seems to be going in the right direction in poultry production.
