According to the official data, about 1 million and 70 metric tons of red meat is consumed in country annually.

Lorestan’s 400,000 Small Livestock Herd: A Step Toward Red Meat Self-Sufficiency
A pilot project, launched in 2025 across villages in the province, is set to revolutionize local livelihoods while boosting domestic red meat production.
Official statistics show that Iran consumes around 1.07 million tons of red meat annually. Of this, 923,000 tons are produced domestically by rural and industrial livestock farms.

Iran currently meets over 85% of its red meat needs (923,000 out of 1.07 million tons) through domestic production in both traditional and industrial livestock farms - demonstrating remarkable self-sufficiency in this sector.

Implementation of the Comprehensive Red Meat Self-Sufficiency Plan
The Ministry of Agricultural Jihad, in partnership with the Planning and Budget Organization, is currently executing a comprehensive red meat self-sufficiency program. The initiative aims to meet 100% of domestic demand through local production by the end of the Seventh Development Plan.
This achievement will not only guarantee the nation's food security but also reduce import dependency and strengthen the national economy.

Agriculture Minister Vows Full Meat Self-Sufficiency Within 3 Years
In a recent address, Iran's Minister of Agricultural Jihad reaffirmed strong government support for domestic livestock producers, stating:
"Currently, 80% of the country's red meat needs are met through domestic production. We have already set to achieve complete self-sufficiency within the next three years."
The Director of Lorestan's Agricultural Jihad Organization emphasized that the complete implementation of this initiative is projected to make a substantial contribution to achieving national self-sufficiency in red meat production.

However, achieving these ambitious targets may face significant challenges - with drought conditions emerging as the primary obstacle to meat production growth.

Despite 75% of Iran's land area being affected by arid climate conditions, authorities remain confident in achieving meat self-sufficiency through strategic breeding programs. Official Statement: "Through our implemented breeding improvement programs, we've successfully developed a high-yield livestock population of 1.5 million head. Our target is to expand this to 4-5 million productive animals to ensure sustainable meat production."
